WHEN THE DARK WAVES ROUND US ROLL

When the dark waves round us roll

1.

When the dark waves round us roll,
And we look in vain for aid,
Speak, Lord, to the trembling soul,
“It is I; be not afraid.”

2.

When we dimly trace Thy form
In mysterious clouds arrayed,
Be the echo of the storm,
“It is I; be not afraid.”

3.

When our brightest hopes depart,
When our fairest visions fade,
Whisper to the fainting heart,
“It is I; be not afraid.”

4.

When we weep beside the bier
Where some well-loved form is laid,
O may then the mourner hear,
“It is I; be not afraid.”

5.

When with wearing hopeless pain
Sinks the spirit, sore dismayed,
Breathe Thou then the comfort-strain,
“It is I; be not afraid.”

6.

When we feel the end is near,
Passing into death’s dark shade,
May the voice be strong and clear,
“It is I; be not afraid.”

WANDERING IN THE SHADES OF NIGHT

Wandering in the shades of night

1.

I wandered in the shades of night,
Till Jesus came to me,
And with the sunlight of His love
Bid all my darkness flee.

Refrain:
Sunlight, sunlight in my soul today,
Sunlight, sunlight all along the way;
Since the Savior found me, took away my sin,
I have had the sunlight of His love within.

2.

Tho’ clouds may gather in the sky,
And billows round me roll,
However dark the world may be
I’ve sunlight in my soul.

Refrain:
Sunlight, sunlight in my soul today,
Sunlight, sunlight all along the way;
Since the Savior found me, took away my sin,
I have had the sunlight of His love within.

3.

I cross the wide extended fields,
I journey o’er the plain,
And in the sunlight of His love
I reap the golden grain.

Refrain:
Sunlight, sunlight in my soul today,
Sunlight, sunlight all along the way;
Since the Savior found me, took away my sin,
I have had the sunlight of His love within.

4.

Soon I shall see Him as He is,
The Light that came to me;
Behold the brightness of His face,
Throughout eternity.

Refrain:
Sunlight, sunlight in my soul today,
Sunlight, sunlight all along the way;
Since the Savior found me, took away my sin,
I have had the sunlight of His love within.

WHEN RISING FROM THE BED OF DEATH

1.

When rising from the bed of death,
O’erwhelmed with guilt and fear,
I see my Maker face to face,
O how shall I appear?

2.

If yet, while pardon may be found,
And mercy may be sought,
My heart with inward horror shrinks,
And trembles at the thought;

3.

When Thou, O Lord, shalt stand disclosed
In majesty severe,
And sit in judgment on my soul,
O how shall I appear?

4.

But Thou hast told the troubled mind
Who does her sins lament,
The timely tribute of her tears
Shall endless woe prevent.

5.

Then see the sorrow of my heart,
Ere yet it be too late;
And hear my Savior’s dying groans,
To give those sorrows weight.

6.

For never shall my soul despair
Her pardon to procure,
Who knows Thine only Son has died
To make her pardon sure.

WHEN PEACE LIKE A RIVER

WHEN PEACE LIKE A  RIVER

1.

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
when sorrows like sea billows roll;
whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.

Refrain:
It is well with my soul,
it is well, it is well with my soul.

2.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
let this blest assurance control,
that Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
and hath shed his own blood for my soul.

Refrain:
It is well with my soul,
it is well, it is well with my soul.

3.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

Refrain:
It is well with my soul,
it is well, it is well with my soul.

4.

And, Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
the clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
the trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
even so, it is well with my soul.

Refrain:
It is well with my soul,
it is well, it is well with my soul.

WHEN ON MY DAY OF LIFE THE NIGHT IS FALLING

When on my day of life

1.

When on my day of life the night is falling,
And in the winds, from unsunned spaces blown,
I hear far voices out of darkness calling
My feet to paths unknown.

2.

Thou, Who hast made my home of life so pleasant,
Leave not its tenant when its walls decay;
O Love divine, O Helper ever present,
Be Thou my strength and stay!

3.

Be near me when all else is from me drifting
Earth, sky, home’s pictures, days of shade and shine,
And kindly faces to my own uplifting
The love which answers mine.

4.

I have but Thee, my Father; let Thy Spirit
Be with me then to comfort and uphold;
No gate of pearl, no branch of palm I merit,
Nor street of shining gold.

5.

Suffice it if my good and ill unreckoned,
And both forgiven through Thy abounding grace
I find myself by hands familiar beckoned
Unto my fitting place.

6.

Some humble door among Thy many mansions,
Some sheltering shade where sin and striving cease,
And flows forever through heaven’s green expansions
The river of Thy peace.

7.

There from the music round about me stealing
I fain would learn the new and holy song,
And find at last, beneath Thy trees of healing,
The life for which I long

WHEN O'ER MY SINS I SORROW

When O'er My Sins I Sorrow

1.

When o’er my sins I sorrow,
Lord, I will look to Thee
And hence my comfort borrow
That Thou wast slain for me;
Yea, Lord, Thy precious blood was spilt
For me, O most unworthy,
To take away my guilt.

2.

Oh, what a marvelous offering!
Behold, the Master spares
His servants, and their suffering
And grief for them He bears.
God stoopeth from His throne on high;
For me, His guilty creature,
He deigns as man to die.

3.

My manifold transgression
Henceforth can harm me none
Since Jesus’ bloody Passion
For me God’s grace hath won.
His precious blood my debts hath paid;
Of hell and all its torments
I am no more afraid.

4.

Therefore I will forever
Give glory unto Thee,
O Jesus, loving Savior,
For what Thou didst for me.
I’ll spend my breath in songs of thanks
For Thy sad cry, Thy sufferings,
Thy wrongs, Thy guiltless death.

WHEN MY WEARY HANDS ARE FOLDED ON MY FAINTLY

When My Weary Hands Are Folded

1.

When my weary hands are folded on my faintly throbbing breast,
And my soul has spread her pinions for the city of the blest;
’Twill be sweet to hear the loved ones sing some dear, familiar song,
As I rise to join the chorus of the blood-washed, holy throng.

2.

But a greater joy ’twill give me if some toiling one can say,
I have helped to bear his burden and have cheered him on the way;
Oh! I’ll praise His grace forever Who hath died to ransom me,
And hath chosen me a sharer in His blessèd work to be.

3.

When the songs of earth are over, and my last “goodbye” is said,
When my lifeless form they follow to the dwelling of the dead;
’Twill be sweet if friends remember and shall mark the quiet spot,
Telling only that the sleeper hath not quickly been forgot.

4.

But if one poor, weary wand’rer shall be guided home by me,
’Twere a grander, nobler monument, throughout all eternity;
And to Him shall be the glory, unto Whom all praise is due,
For the love that hath redeemed us, and hath made my heaven two.

5.

When among the ransomed millions by His grace redeemed I stand,
Then my song shall swell the chorus of the glad, triumphant band;
Oh, how sweet will be the resting when my conflicts are all past,
Oh, the mighty “Alleluia” of our victory at last
